2.2 What We Believe
Vision, Mission and Ethos
The Mater Hospital opened its doors on 24th September 1861, and has proudly upheld a healing and ministering tradition which is derived from the indomitable spirit of Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine’s defining characteristics inspired a motivation to belong, to be involved, to participate and to contribute. She trusted people, had confidence in the young, was sensitive to the needs of others, showed concern for social issues, demonstrated excellence in leadership, believed in openness, and being available to people, and above all she had a loving heart. This spirit has been nurtured and preserved down through the generations of Mercy Sisters.
The core of the hospital’s mission centres on providing the very best care to patients, always with an abiding respect for the dignity of human life. The Mission Effectiveness Department office has responsibility to keep the foundational values alive and to ensure these values are integrated and find expression in the day-to-day hospital experiences.
